Child Abuse: UNICEF Seeks Buhari’s Support Over Eradication

                                 The United Nations Children’s Educational Fund (UNICEF) has appealed to Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of the president, to partner with it in championing the rights and educational advancement of Nigerian children. Mr Mohamed Fall, the Country Representative of UNICEF made the appeal on Saturday at a reception in honour of Buhari as a strong advocate of rights of women and children at the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) in Abuja on Saturday. The event was jointly organised by the centre and the Blaugrana International Sports, with the theme: “Legends For Children Project”. Navy Promises Adequate Security Of Waterways

The Nigerian Navy has reiterated its commitment to securing the nation’s waterways and training and retraining of officers and men to ensure professionalism. The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Rear Adm. Obi Ofodile, made the pledge at the closing of a seminar held at the command on Friday in Lagos. The seminar had the theme: “Consolidating Professional Training in the Nigerian Navy”. According to him, the purpose of training is to effectively tackle current challenges. “When you train well, you can operate well. Enugu police arrest 2 armed robbery suspects

                    THE Police in Enugu has arrested a suspected armed robber at Amalla in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State. In a statement issued yesterday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu, which stated that the suspect is an armed robbery Kingpin identified as one Mathew Ugwu aka “fire”, was nabbed by the security operatives following a tip-off. UTME 2018: Identical Twins Arrested For Exam Malpractice

                              Two brothers, who are identical twins, have been arrested for alleged examination malpractice in the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), at the University of Maiduguri centre, Borno. Mr Babagana Gutti, Chief Examiner Officer in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the twins were apprehended by the security operatives on Saturday in Maiduguri. Gutti said that the lookalike brothers tricked invigilators and security personnel to gain entrance to the centre. He said one of them tried to sit for the examination on behalf of his brother.                             The man accused of stealing the Oscar statue won by Frances McDormand, has pleaded not guilty to theft at a court in Los Angeles. Terry Bryant, 47, was arrested on Sunday night after actress McDormand's award went missing briefly at the lavish Governors Ball party in Hollywood, where Academy Award winners have their statuettes engraved. In a video posted by Bryant, he is seen in a tuxedo at the event holding an Oscar statuette and telling other guests he was a winner. He then kissed the statue. It is not clear in what capacity he was attending the event, but police said he had a ticket. Following his arrest, Bryant was in police custody on a grand theft charge and was being held on $20,000 bond. After Wednesday's court arraignment, Bryant was released without bail after the judge ruled that he did not pose a flight risk. Police arrest notorious pipeline vandal in Bayelsa State

The Bayelsa State Police Command on Tuesday, arrested a suspected cult member and pipeline vandal, Temona Boleigha Alison. The Spokesman for the command, DSP Asinim Butswats, who confirmed the arrest, said Alison’s arrest was made possible due to a tip to the state’s Strike Force, a team specialised in tracking down wanted criminals. Alison, said to be a member of a crime syndicate, has been linked to the vandalism of several oil pipelines in different parts of the state. Butwats said Alison was arrested in possession of four hand grenades, one live cartridge, a pair of military uniform, one machete, one SIM card, and twelve wraps of substance suspected to be cocaine. "The suspect is undergoing a thorough interrogation, " he said.

Serial rapist sentenced to 72 years begs judge for death sentence

                      A serial rapist who on Tuesday begged the court to hang him for his heinous acts, has been sentenced to an effective 72 years in jail, in Zimbabwe. According to Herald, regional magistrate  Mrs Dambudzo Malunga had sentenced  Charles Magombedze  to 78 years in prison, but conditionally suspended six years. . Magombedze was convicted on eight counts of rape on his own plea of guilty. He shocked the court when he requested the hangman’s noose, saying he was unable to exorcise the evil spirit that led him into committing the crimes if left alive. . Malunga said Magombedze deserved severe punishment as he behaved like a beast when he raped the victims by using dangerous weapons like iron bars, axes and machetes when he committed the offences. Nigerian man, one other arrested in the U.S. for alleged involvement in financial scam

                                       Eagle police arrested a 38-year-old Nigerian man, Babajide Ayowole Ogunnubi, on felony racketeering and theft charges for his part in a classified ad scam involving a local newspaper and a Walmart in Beaumont, Texas. Ogunnubi allegedly convinced Linda Lazard Franks, 56, of Beaumont, to sign for money orders and other financial transactions and then give the money to him. Franks told Eagle police that Ogunnubi told her that he had lots of friends in the Houston and Beaumont areas who would send money to him. Eagle police say Ogunnubi stole at least $3,124.56 between Oct. 22 and Nov 28, 2017. He is being held on $100,000 bond. For her part in all this, Franks faces five felonies. She is accused of stealing more than $28,000 in nine days through 28 fraudulent transactions, some of them from Eagle County victims, Eagle police say.               Yesterday, after the parade of three suspected ritualists cum fraudsters who were recently arrested, the Osun State Police Commissioner, Olafimihan Adeoye led other top officers of the command to their shrine in Ilase-Ijesha. The ring leader of the ritualistic gang, , Afolabi Ganiyu, popularly called Ifatoki, gave an insight into how they used to carry out their heinous operation, before they met their Waterloo. The police discreet investigation revealed that the suspects are a gang of ritualists and impersonators. Items recovered from the suspects include one mirror, booklet of receipts, six calabash, one wooden box, three charms account book, one local pot and a complete local attire with a cap.

Another high school shooting: Student killed in "accidental" shooting in Huffman High School

                                   A Huffman High School senior has been killed and another injured after gunfire erupted in a classroom at the east Birmingham school on Wednesday afternoon, and police are calling it an "accidental" shooting. On March 7, 17-year-old Courtlin Arrington was shot dead by a 17-year-old boy in her school by mistake. He then also mistakenly shot himself in the leg. According to the Atlanta-Journal-Constitution, the boy was "showing off a gun" to girls in the school just as school was about to dismiss for the day, and it accidentally discharged, killing Courtlin. Police say the boy then put the gun he had just fired into his waistband and accidentally shot himself in the leg.  Arrington and the boy who is a junior and member of the football team were both rushed to UAB Hospital in separate Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service trucks.
