Zamfara Killings: Politicians disagree on state of emergency

Saidu Dansadau The incessant killings in Zamfara State has led to a disagreement among politicians on whether or not a state of emergency should be declared in the North-west state. A state of emergency could mean the federal government taking over governance in the state and massively deploying soldiers to maintain peace there. The federal government could also choose to appoint an administrator to govern the state during the period of the emergency rule. The debate over a state of emergency follows the repeated killings in Zamfara in recent weeks by armed bandits. While dozens have been killed in recent weeks, hundreds have been killed in the state in 2018. Many others have been kidnapped for ransom and several houses destroyed. The killings have continued despite the deployment of soldiers and other security operatives to the state. The killings led the governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari, saying he has relinquished his position as chief security officer

We’ve resolved our problems with UNICEF – Nigerian Army

UNICEF is one of the international organisations operating in the North-eastern part of Nigeria to asssit victims of the Boko Haram insurgency. He lamented the spate of “campaign of calumny” against the military through social media platform by some organisations at the detriment of national security. Mr Buratai described the allegations of human rights abuses against the military by Amnesty International, lack of equipment and nonpayment allowances to troops as misleading. “The war against terrorism should be a collective responsi

British Prime Minister Theresa May was said to have sanctioned the operation of the SBS, an elite naval unit in the UK, and the special commandos were flown on a helicopter to the vessel off the coast of Kent near the Thames Estuary. The ship left Lagos on December 10 and the Nigerian stowaways were found four days ago when they allegedly threatened to harm the crew, according to the owner of 71,000-tonne ship Grande Tema, Napoli-based Grimaldi Lines. “They were locked in a cabin,” said Paul Kyprianou, a spokespers
