Zambia on course to fight corruption – Vice-President

Zambian Vice-President Inonge Wina said on Friday that the government was on course in its resolve to fight corruption in the country.

The Zambian vice-president said the government has put stringent measures to fight corruption such as establishment of Integrity Committees in all government institutions but added that fighting the vice requires concerted efforts with all stakeholders.

“Fighting corruption is not the job of government alone, this is because corruption takes place in both the public and private sector, therefore Zambians must take an active role in fighting corruption,” she said in a statement released by her office just before departure to Mauritania for the 31st African Union (AU) Heads of States and Government Summit.

According to her, corruption undermines the fabric of society and that the government will not allow it to take root in Zambia.
The Zambian vice-president further urged stakeholders in the country to desist from sensationalizing and politicizing corruption issues and giving the public a perception that the government was not committed to the fight.

President Edgar Lungu’s government has come under heavy criticism over its lackluster approach to the fight against corruption, with critics accusing the Zambian leader of turning a blind eye to high levels of graft in his administration.

A female journalist has been shot dead while covering a riot in Londonderry, Ireland. Lyra McKee, 29, is believed to have been hit by a stray bullet after a gunman opened fire indiscriminately at around 11pm. Shortly before she was killed, Ms McKee, who was covering the riots, had posted an image from the scene of the riots on Twitter. She captioned it: "Derry tonight. Absolute madness."                                         US rapper, Young Jeezy ’s 22-year-old son Jadarius was reportedly slashed in the face during an altercation that allegedly left another man dead. According to TMZ, Jadarius was involved in an incident Sunday morning in Georgia that ended with gunfire. The Gossip site reported that Officers responded to shots fired call, and when they arrived they found a 37-year-old man had been shot. He later died at the hospital Police confirmed that Jeezy's son sustained a “possible knife wound to the face” and was treated at the scene, but it’s unclear what occurred prior to the altercation between the two. Drew Findling, the attorney for Jeezy’s son, told TMZ “We are grateful to law enforcement for releasing Jadarius after their preliminary investigation. He continues to receive medical treatment for the injury he endured during the incident.” Another source added that Jadarius was acting in self-defense during the altercation.
