Danfo driver sentenced to 1 year in prison for stabbing LASTMA official

A commercial bus driver, who stabbed an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment.
Kenneth Anyanwu stabbed Olanrewaju Yusuf with a broken bottle following a disagreement on April 26, 2018.
Yusuf, a LASTMA official, attempted to arrest Anyanwu for picking passengers at undesignated bus stops between Obanikoro and Palm Grove in Lagos, but Anyanwu resisted arrest, then he picked up a broken bottle and stabbed Yusuf in the palm.

Anyanwu was sentenced by a Lagos State Mobile Court sitting in Oshodi. Magistrate F.O. Ikobayo convicted Anyanwu after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace. She sentenced him to one year imprisonment or a fine of N50,000. The magistrate also ordered the convict to pay N80,000 for Yusuf’s medical bills.

                                  Atleast 5 people were killed and several others injured in fresh attacks on Fulani settlements by suspected Mambilla militia in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State on Saturday. The spokesman for the Taraba State Police Command, ASP David Misal, who confirmed the incident said the crisis started on Thursday over a land dispute between Fulani and Mambilla in Yerimaru village and later snowballed into neighbouring villages. Misal said that units of mobile policemen and soldiers from the 20 battalion in Serti have been dispatched to the area to maintain law and order, adding that several homes were burnt down and many cows killed and stolen during the attack. Killings: Group demands resignation of Police IG

                              A human rights group, National Intervention Group of Nigeria, has called for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for alleged loss of morality to continue in office given his inability to tackle killings across the country. The convener of the group, Segun Akinloye, made this call on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja on the state of the nation. Mr Akinloye said “the lives of Nigerians, even in Nigeria appears nowadays to be cheaper and more worthless than ever before witnessed or recorded in history.” He frowned at the powerlessness of the police to abate the killings, warning that Nigeria may be heading to division and eventual collapse if urgent steps are not taken.
