Northern Ireland police arrest 2 over journalist’s murder

Lyra McKee Police have arrested men in connection with the killing of Northern Irish journalist Lyra McKee during a riot in Londonderry on Thursday, police said, as politicians in the divided British region united to condemn the attack. McKee, an award-winning 29-year-old journalist who was writing a book on the disappearance of young people during decades of violence in Northern Ireland, was shot dead as she watched Irish nationalist youths attack police following a raid. “Major Investigation Team detectives have arrested two men, aged 18 and 19 under the Terrorism Act, in connection with the murder,” the Police Service of Northern Ireland said in a statement. Northern Ireland’s political parties, which are broadly split between Irish nationalists aspiring to unite the British region with Ireland and unionists who want it to remain British, united to condemn the attack. Air Force on fact finding mission over alleged killing of innocents in Zamfara

Nigerian Air Force Alpha jet A team of Nigerian Air Force officers, led by AVM Idi Lubo, on Friday arrived Zamfara to investigate allegations that innocent citizens were recently bombarded through air strikes by NAF personnel in the state. Three sentenced to death by hanging for kidnapping a deaconess in Akwa Ibom

                  Three policemen and four others have been sentenced to death by hanging by an Akwa Ibom High Court for kidnapping a woman, Deaconess Ime Ekanem in 2012. The criminals were dragged to court by the police after being apprehended while trying to collect a ransom of N1.8 million from the victim after the crime had been committed. According to the court papers, the defendants are Cpl Emmanuel Charlie, Ekaette Moses, Fidelis Jeremiah, Cpl Bassey Sunday (377812), PC Mfon Bassey (478463), Ndu Johnny, Unyime Etukakpan, and Itohowo Akpakwa, worked closely with a friend of the victim to commit the crime. The friend gave the kidnappers the home address of her friend and her itinerary. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa has described the death sentence passed on eight Nigerians in United Arab Emirate (UAE) as unfortunate. Eight Nigerians were sentenced to death on Wednesday in Sharjah, UAE for a string of robberies at money exchanges and cash machines (ATMs) across the emirate in December 2016. 71-year-old man charged with 100 counts of rape involving children under 13

                                            A 71-year-old man,  Harvey J. Fountain , who was arrested on 50 counts of first-degree rape last week has now been charged with 50 more counts. Stephen Phillips  of the  Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office  in  Louisiana  said he began the crimes in the early 1970s and continued for a decade. He said all of the assaults happened in Pineville, La., and involved children under 13. According to Phillips, the decades-old accusations came to light April 1, when one of the victims disclosed the abuse to local authorities. Kenyan student stabbed by her ex-boyfriend after she ended their relationship

                        Naomi Chepkemboi, a Third Year Public Health student at Pwani University, Kenya, was stabbed in the chest and neck by her ex-boyfriend Henry Kipkoech, who is a student at Kenyatta University, Nairobi. Ms Chepkemboi says she left her boyfriend in December last year because he was “irresponsible”. The two have a 4-month old daughter together. Speaking from her hospital bed in Kilifi County, Naomi Chepkemboi said Mr Kipkoech showed up at her rented room in Kilifi early Sunday, when he meted out the ugly attack on her. “He came to my room at 6am, and knocked on my door. I peeped through the window, and saw him. I went back to bed because I did not want to open the door for him. A Qatari man has angered people after he shared a video tutorial teaching Muslim men how to beat their wives. Abd Al-Aziz Al-Khazraj, a Qatari sociologist, advised men to punish their wives so she can feel their strength. But he warned that it is not acceptable to injure her with beatings. He then proceeded to teach men how best to punish their wives under Islamic laws. He uploaded the outrageous video to his Al-Mojtama YouTube channel. Ex-President Omar al-Bashir sent to prison days after he was ousted in a military coup

Sudan's former President Omar al-Bashir has been moved to Kobar maximum security prison, days after he was deposed in a military coup.   Reports say the ex-leader has until now been detained at the presidential residence under heavy guard. He is reportedly being held in solitary confinement and is surrounded by tight security.   Months of protests in Sudan led to the ousting and arrest of the long-time ruler on Thursday. Uganda's Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Oryem Okello told Reuters news agency the country would consider offering the deposed leader asylum if he applied, despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).   As an ICC member, Uganda would have to hand over Mr Bashir if he arrived in the country. Landslide destroys properties in Odi Community, Bayelsa State

Odi community leaders and the Bayelsa state government are calling on the federal government, through the Ecological Fund Office, to come to the community’s aid after heavy rains, swept away houses and property worth millions of naira into the nearby River Nun.   It destroyed electricity cables, and threw the town into darkness, Daily Trust reports.  The Odi Council of Chiefs called on FG to approve the Odi shoreline protection project as the river has again overflowed its banks, destroyed four houses and a large portion of the major road in the community.   Chairman of Odi Community Development Committee (CDC), Goddy Niweigha, said:  “we are pleading with President Muhammadu Buhari to come to our aid and ensure that the approval process is fast tracked. At least 29 dead as tourist coach topples off mountain road on Portuguese Island

No fewer than 29 people have died and 22 people were injured after a tourist coach toppled off a mountain road on the holiday island of Madeira, Portugal. The coach, which was carrying 55 passengers and a guide, was heading to Funchal, the island's capital, when it careered off the road near the town of Canico.  Filipe Sousa, the mayor of the nearby town of Santa Cruz, said 12 men and 17 women died in the crash - the majority of whom were German nationals.  Locals said the driver lost control of the coach on a bend, careered off the winding mountain road and crashed onto the top of a house. Mother weeps profusely in court as suspected killers of her first class daughter plead not guilty

It was a somber mood in the Asaba High Court in Delta state yesterday April 17th as the Mother of the slain Miss Elozino Ogege, the first class 300 level student of Mass Communication, Delta State University (DELSU) who was gruesomely murdered sometime in November 2018 by suspected ritualists, wept profusely as the suspected murderers pleaded not guilty to the eight-count charge preferred against them by the state Attorney-General. The body of Elozino Ogege, who was declared missing on November 15th 2018, was reportedly found with her tongue and breasts chopped off. Prof Ikechi Mgbeoji and other Nigerians demand the release of 15-year-old arrested for poisoning her husband

Professor Ikechi Mgbeoji has joined other Nigerians in calling for the release of the 15-year-old child who was arrested for poisoning her much older husband in Kano state. Hassana Lawan, of Bechi Village, allegedly poisoned 33-year-old Sale Abubakar on April 16 at about 2pm. She allegedly gave him food with rat poison.  The husband was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano for treatment while it was revealed that the housewife will be charged to court. But Nigerians are calling for her release with the hashtag  # FreeHassanaLawan .  According to Prof. Ikechi, an author, it is the husband who married a child bride that deserves arrest, not the "poor girl". New Zealand ex-official found guilty of hiding camera inside the country's embassy toilet in US for intimate visual recording

                            Alfred Keating , one of New Zealand’s former top-ranked military officials in the US, has been found guilty of planting a secret camera in a unisex bathroom at the country's embassy in Washington DC. The 59-year-old faces up to 18 months in prison for attempting to make an intimate visual recording. According to BBC, Keating's DNA matched traces found on the SD card in the camera, which appeared to have been in place for many months. He will be sentenced on 25 June. Keating was serving as a defence attache at New Zealand’s embassy in Washington when a small, covert camera was discovered in a unisex bathroom after it fell out of a hiding spot in a heating duct on 27 July 2017. A man who seemed to be at his wit's end took off all his clothes to protest non-payment of salary for three months. The man's child is reportedly very ill and he has allegedly not been paid for three months by the company he works for. The man went to the company and took off all his clothes while demanding he gets paid. He said they offered to give him transport money but he wants his three months salary. Spectators can be heard saying, "Make una give this man him money nau." as they stood by the gate with the man carrying out a naked protest.

Man, wife arrested for killing their son over allegations he is a wizard

The Akwa Ibom state police command have arrested a man, Essien Okon,  and his wife, Peace, for allegedly killing their 12-year-old son, Joseph. According to the police, Essien and his wife, Peace allegedly prepared a poisonous concoction with a certain seed called asene and forced the boy to drink it so he can die because they believed he was a wizard and was responsible for the ill-luck they have encountered for many years. When interrogated, Essien said his son was a wizard, who killed his former wife who was his mother. Essien said after the demise of Joseph's mother, he got married to Peace and that ever since then, his family has not known any progress.
