THE EPIDEMIC OF FIRE OUTBREAKS

•Federal service should get its act together Bad news about the frequency of fire outbreaks as well as the inadequacies of fire management in the country is worrying indeed.  According to a report, there were “about 50 fire outbreaks recorded in a space of one week and 40 of them occurring in Lagos State alone.” Following a major fire outbreak at a plastic factory in Oshodi, Lagos, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Seyi Oladejo, reportedly said the state recorded about 40 fire incidents in two days, between February 17 and 19. ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS

Flipping a light switch. Plugging in a coffeemaker. Charging a laptop computer. These are second nature for most of us. Electricity makes our lives easier. However, we need to be cautious and keep safety in mind. SAFETY TIPS 🔸Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician. 🔹 When you are buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified inspector. 🔸Only use one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffee maker, toaster, microwave oven , etc.) plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time. 🔹Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, etc.) should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Use a qualified electrician. 🔹Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. GFCIs shut off an elec...

WHY STUDY DOMESTIC SMOKE ALARMS?

For as little as  a stand-alone smoke alarm can be purchased from a supermarket, department or hardware store. Provided with the alarm are a set of instructions as to how to install and maintain the mechanism. Reputable brands, registered to the standards acknowledged by the prefixes ANSI (American National Standards Institute), AS (Australian Standard), BS (British Standard), ULC (Underwriters Laboratories Canada) and ULI (Underwriters Laboratories Inc) assure, if installed and maintained correctly, the reliability of the alarm as an early detector of fire.  Less reliable are the human behavioural aspects associated with the installation, maintenance and response to the alarm signal. The following research sets out to determine if a signal from an inexpensive domestic smoke alarm is effective at providing early warning to a fire.
