French Oscar and Grammy winning composer Michel Legrand dies at 86

French composer Michel Legrand, who won three Oscars during a career spanning more than half a century, has died aged 86.

Legrand first won an Academy Award in 1969 for the song The Windmills of Your Mind from the film The Thomas Crown Affair. He followed that with Oscars for his music for Summer of ’42 in 1972 and for Yentl in 1984. He also won five Grammys.

Legrand, who had been scheduled to hold concerts in Paris in April, died during the night, his spokesman told Agence France-Presse on Saturday. He first began working as an accompanist and arranger in the 1960s.

During his career he worked with Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Orson Welles, Jean Cocteau, Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf. Legrand was also known for his scores for the French New Wave director Jacques Demy for the films Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) in 1964 and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (The Young Ladies of Rochefort) in 1967, both of which received Oscar nominations.

Dare devil armed robbers today attacked a new generation commercial bank in Ila-Orangun, Osun state killing three persons, including police security. The suspected armed robbers, numbering about eight, were said to have stormed the bank at about 2pm and operated for one- and- a half hours after blasting the bank’s security door with an explosive substance. A breakdown of the new cases across states is as follows; Lagos-41, Ogun-27, Rivers-19, Abia-10, Oyo-6, Plateau-6, Bauchi-5, Ondo-5, Ekiti-4, Kaduna-4, Edo-3, Ebonyi-2, Bayelsa-1, Delta-1, Osun-1, Yobe-1. There are now 58,198 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the country and 1,106 deaths have been recorded. 49,722 patients who recovered from the disease have also been discharged.

Trump to ban TikTok in United state

President Donald Trump has revealed plans to ban TikTok app in the United States through executive authority today. "As far as TikTok is concerned, we're banning them from the United States," Trump told reporters while flying home from Florida on Friday evening, July 31. The president said he would sign something as soon as Saturday, and he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order. "Well, I have that authority," he said. Trump called the decision "severance" and firmly rejected the reported deal involving Microsoft buying TikTok.
