Senator Omo-Agege and Ali Ndume appear before investigative panel over 'Mace' theft

Yesterday Senator Ovie Omo-Agege honoured the invitation of an ad-hoc committee drafted to investigate the incident of the chamber invasion.

The committee was set up by the Senate and the House of Representatives. Ali Ndume, another senator invited by the committee, was also in attendance on Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports, Omo-Agege was on sit as at 12:16 a.m. when the committee commenced the sitting while Ndume walked in at about 12:20 a.m. The senators are expected to answer questions on their roles in the invasion of the Senate chamber last month.

The Senate in April suspended Mr Omo-Agege for accusing his colleagues of working against President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election plans in 2019. The senator made the accusation after his colleagues adopted the amendment to section 25 of Electoral Act outlining a change in the sequence of elections.

A week after the suspension, hoodlums invaded the Senate carting away the mace, the Senate’s symbol of authority. The mace was later recovered by the police. The hoodlums are believed to have been led by Mr Omo-Agege, who has however, denied any wrongdoing.

The committee in its first sitting invited the two senators after police witnesses mentioned them as culpable in the invasion and subsequent mace theft.

Senegal seeks to move huge ammonium nitrate stock from Dakar port

Dakar Senegalese officials say they have asked for 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate - the chemical which caused a huge explosion in Beirut - to be removed from Dakar. The amount in Dakar's port, which is near residential areas, is nearly as much as was in the Lebanese capital. Officials say the chemical is part of a 3,050-tonne consignment destined for neighbouring Mali. Port officials say 350 tonnes has already been transported there. The government says the owner of the consignment has asked to store the chemical in a warehouse at Diamniadio, about 30km (20 miles) from Dakar. But the ministry of environment has not yet approved the request, saying the site has not met all the required conditions, including carrying out an environmental and social impact study. Widow calls on police to arrest her husband's killers

A bereaved wife has begged the police to arrest her husband's killers. Aderonke Balogun, 25, narrated how her husband, Sulaimon Ajayi, was rushed to a hospital following an attack on him. He was later discharged but was admitted again when he developed complications. He died days later in the hospital. Trouble began when members of Ijegemo-Omilende community in Ado-Odo area of Ogun state woke up to find the mutilated body of a young man who was murdered and some of his body parts carted away by an unknown person.
