Winnie Mandela has died at the age of 81

Anti-apartheid activist, Nomzamo Winifred Madikizela-Mandela‚ has died at the age of 81.

Her Personal Assistant‚ Zodwa Zwane‚ who confirmed the struggle veteran’s death on Monday afternoon, April 2, said the family would be issuing a statement later in the day.

Born in Bizana in the Eastern Cape in 1936‚ she moved to Johannesburg to study social work after matriculating.

She met lawyer and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela in 1957 and they were married a year later. They had two children together.

However‚ her marriage life with Mandela was short-lived‚ as he was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to life imprisonment for treason. Mandela was eventually released in 1990.

United Nations asks individuals and nations to contribute $35bn for WHO's initiatives to fight Covid-19

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has called for a “quantum leap in funding” for the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) initiative to speed up the development of COVID-19 vaccine. The UN Chief said as much as $35bn would be needed in order to efficiently fund the fight against COVID-19. According to Guterres, the funding project, known as the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT), has received 3 billion dollars. The initiative, which was launched at a Brussels donor conference in May, advocates for the fair distribution of future vaccines and medications to developing as well as developed countries. The suspected killer of Vincent Umeh, an Inspector of Police attached to Zone 9 Umuahia, Abia State, has been shot dead by the operatives of the Imo State Police Command. Some gunmen had on March 1, 2017, shot dead the Inspector Umeh on Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway and made away with his Toyota Corolla which he was travelling in. Spokesperson for the Command, DSP Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the killing said the deceased, Chimaobi Okorie was among the dreaded armed robbery gang terrorizing Okigwe and its environs. Foul play suspected in the death of Black college student found hanging in Atlanta

A Black man was found hanging off the MLK Bridge in Atlanta and initial report from local authorities was that the man "committed suicide". However some evidence suggest he may have been killed. A video shared online shows the Morehouse College student hanging by his neck with a metal chain, not a rope or belt. He is also seen wearing his backpack. Atlanta police were called to MLK Drive at about 6:30 p.m. Friday and wiithin hours of the body being located and without any witnesses, police closed the case and classified it as a suicide. But reports say someone around the area claim they heard someone yelling, "don't do it."
