Zimbabwe frees 3,000 prisoners in massive prison decongestion exercise

President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe yesterday pardoned 3,000 prisoners as part of government efforts to decongest prisons and improve living conditions of inmates.

Those who benefited from the amnesty, announced by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) include all female prisoners except those sentenced to death or facing life sentences, all juveniles and all people jailed for less than 36 months.  

Disabled inmates, the terminally ill and those above 60 years who had served one third of their sentences were also pardoned. The pardon does not apply to habitual criminals previously pardoned but jailed again and those convicted of murder, treason, rape and armed robbery.  

Zimbabwe’s prisons are battling overcrowding as they are currently holding 20,000 inmates against a carrying capacity of 17,000. “As the ZPCS we applaud the move taken by His Excellency (President Mnangagwa) in exercising his prerogative of mercy to some prisoners behind bats,’’ ZPCS deputy commissioner general Alford Mashango Dube said.  

This is Mnangagwa’s first amnesty for prisoners since he assumed power last November. The last pardon that set free thousands of prisoners was done by former president Robert Mugabe in 2016 as prisons were struggling to feed the inmates.

Pastor kills his lover, cuts off her head and hands and buries her remains inside his church in Ogun

                  The Ogun police command has arrested a pastor who allegedly killed his female lover and buried her body inside his church. The brother of the deceased, 35 year old Raliat Sanni, Adebola Saheed, had gone to the police to lodge a complaint after she left the house on March 21st and did not return. Vietnam authorities seize 3.3 tonnes of pangolin scales in a container from Nigeria

                   The customs office at Saigon Port under the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department on May 3 seized an additional 3.3 tonnes of pangolin scales illegally imported from Africa. The container was declared by Tan Vinh Thinh Trade Co. Ltd to contain dried cashew nuts. It was in transit to Cambodia from Nigeria. After examining, the customs office and the Anti-Smuggling Police Department (C74) under the Ministry of Public Security found the pangolin scales contained in bags and covered by cashew nut bags. The city’s customs force is working with relevant agencies to further investigate the case. On April 27, HCM City’s Customs Department also seized nearly 3.8 tonnes of pangolin scales, illegally imported to Cat Lai Port in district 2.
