Truck driver pleads guilty to manslaughter in relation to 39 migrants found dead in lorry in Essex

A truck driver has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in relation to the deaths of 39 migrants discovered in the trailer of a lorry in Grays, Essex, in October last year.

Haulier Ronan Hughes, 40,  pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to the manslaughter of 31 Vietnamese men and eight women. Among the men and women, 10 were teenagers, two of them 15-year-old boys.

The migrants were found suffocated in the trailer of a lorry on an industrial estate at Grays in the early hours of 23 October 2019 in Purfleet.

Prosecutors alleged Haulier played a leading role by allowing his trailers and drivers to be used in human trafficking.

An inquest heard their medical cause of death was asphyxia and hyperthermia - a lack of oxygen and overheating - in an enclosed space.

Hughes was one of seven men accused of being part of a people-smuggling ring linked to the deaths, including truck driver Maurice Robinson, who also pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges at the Old Bailey.

They said they’d had a report that a car had not been driving correctly. “I’m like: ‘So why does that make it my car?’ I got my ID out and they breathalysed me. It’s just one of those thi...

At least 18 people were killed and 20 wounded when two car bombs exploded on Friday near the presidential palace and a hotel in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, the city’s main ambulance service said.  “We have so far collected 18 bodies and 20 wounded persons from one of the blast scenes,”  Abdukadir Abdurahman Aden of the Aamin Ambulance told AFP.   The bombings targeted the presidential palace and a city hotel, police said. The first blast, followed by gunfire, occurred at a checkpoint close to Villa Somalia, while a second followed soon after at a hotel.   “I can confirm an attack in the vicinity of the presidential palace,” said police officer Ibrahim Mohamed. Another car loaded with explosives went off close to a recently opened hotel,” Mohamed added.   The Shabaab Islamist militant group claimed the attacks in a statement posted online, saying it was targeting the government and secur...
