Popular Associate Press photographer, Mohamed Ben Khalifa killed while covering militia clashes in Libya

Popular photographer, Mohamed Ben Khalifa who worked for Associated Press news agency was killed on Saturday Jan 19th south of Libya’s capital Tripoli where he was covering militia clashes.

Khalifa was killed by shellfire that hit the positions of a Tripoli militia that he was accompanying, security sources said. A photographer and cameraman for AP since 2014, 35-year-old Khalifa was married and father to a six-month-old baby.

The clashes have since Wednesday pitched militias from the capital against the Seventh Brigade, an armed group from Tarhuna in western Libya. The country's health ministry said on Friday night that the violence had killed at least 13 and wounded 52 people. The latest fighting follows clashes in and around Tripoli that killed at least 117 people and wounded more than 400 between late August and late September.

Libya has been torn between rival administrations and a myriad of militias since the overthrow and killing of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011. The main armed groups in Tripoli say they are loyal to the internationally backed Government of National Accord (GNA), but officials have struggled to exert real control over the fighters.

The GNA announced security reforms in the wake of the bloodshed last year, aimed at curbing the power of militias in the capital. A rival administration in the east of Libya is backed by strongman Khalifa Haftar and his self-proclaimed Libyan National Army.

Court denies Fred Ajudua bail again, remands him in Kirikiri prison

Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, July 5, 2018, refused a bail application filed by Fred Ajudua, a serial fraud suspect. Ajudua is facing trial alongside one Joseph Ochunor on a 12-count charge bordering on fraud and conspiracy. The defendants were alleged to have defrauded one Ziad Abu Zalaf of Technical International Limited in Germany of a sum of $550, 000 in 1993. At the last adjourned sitting on June 13, 2018, counsel to Ajudua, Norrisson Quakkers, SAN, had urged the court to grant bail to his client on health grounds. "We filed a seven-paragraph affidavit dated June 12, where we stated the medical situation of the defendant,” Quakkers had said. One killed in Gombe communal conflict

The Gombe State Police Command on Friday confirmed the death of one person in Kufai village of Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe state, following a disagreement between inhabitants of some communities in Shongom and Billiri Local Government areas over farmland. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) via telephone, the Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, said the incident occurred on Thursday night, adding that arrests had been made.
