Police arrests 7-suspects selling new Naira notes

Selling newly minted naira notes is an offence that attracts six months imprisonment and seven suspects are now in police net for trading and hawking newly minted naira notes in Onitsha, Anambra state.

According to the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Garba Umar, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has raised alarm over the illegal activity going on for a while now unchecked and calls for swift action to arrest the culprits who even brazenly display them in public as a product.

Garba while addressing the press over the matter cites sections 20 and 21 of the CBN Act that makes it an offence for anyone to sell or hawk naira or coin issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, cautions citizens to desist from abusing the naira and says those arrested will be prosecuted.

At the Anambra State Police Headquarters in Amawbia, seven suspects have been paraded by the police for illegal trading and hawking of newly minted notes in Onitsha. The police upon arresting the suspects on December 21st also recovered over four million naira newly minted notes.

Mr. Garba stated that seven people were with two at large, who are neck-deep in the activity and says they will be prosecuted. One of the suspects speaking on his involvement in the nefarious activity says he does not know the source of the newly minted notes as he buys from a dealer.

Festive periods always come with activities with people engaging in free spraying of money which may warrant one looking for newly minted money, the Commissioner of Police says the CBN is serious with ending the illegality of people trading on naira and anybody found engaging in the business will be prosecuted, adding that aggressive investigation is going on to find out who is the source of the distribution of the newly minted money either from the bank or wherever.

Abuja-based businessman beaten to death by unknown assailants in Enugu

An Abuja-based businessman was beaten to death by unknown assailants in Enugu. The deceased, Chinedu Nzegwu popularly known as Obroshoo by friends, was attacked by the assailants few days before his return to Abuja. They reportedly hit him with a stick on the head leaving him for dead. Late Nzegwu, a Pure and Industrial Chemistry graduate of the University of Port Harcourt,  is a former student of Dennis Memorial Grammar School DMGS, Onitsha, Anambra State. His friends and family members have taken to Facebook to mourn his tragic death. One of them Nwachi Viktor, wrote: "Murdered in cold blood in Enugu by fellow ndi igbo. Another young and hardworking man from Onitsha.He was my junior in Dennis Memorial Grammar school Onitsha. Trying to understand why they had to beat him to death,he was never a thief and came from a good home. Rest in peace Chinedu Nzegwu. No one is safe in Nigeria!"

Man survives after being impaled in the head with a rod

A 21-year-old Indian man has undergone a successful operation to remove an iron rod that pierced through his skull On Wednesday, Sanjay Bahe was recorded calmly talking to medics with the iron rod sticking out of both sides of his head before it was safely removed. He was building a well at his family farm at Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, when he fell onto the metal rods, with one piercing the right side of his skull, passing through his brain and coming out of left side of his head.  Surprisingly, Bahe remained conscious as he was taken to Neuron Hospital for treatment. Neurosurgeon Dr. Pramod Giri said the rod entered the right temporal region of the brain and passed through the left frontal region across the midline. The rod did damage brain tissue but luckily the portion affected may only cause problems like seizures and behavioral changes, like irritability, in later part of his life.
